How do you feel about the “Mike Posner is back!” narrative? From your perspective, you didn’t go anywhere. And I come from a hip-hop background, so I’ve sampled. He could quote, sample, anyone he wanted. From what I understand about Shakespeare - which is not a whole lot - I’ve read that one of the factors in helping make Shakespeare Shakespeare was that there were no copyright laws then. And a certain percentage of these people that hear it go back and hear the original. You’re not an EDM artist, you were never going to make an EDM version. I produced one version, and then these guys reimagined my thing, and it’s much more popular. People say, “Are you pissed that the original one didn’t go?” I find that to be a very pessimistic outlook. In one respect, they’re right. How does it feel for the song to chart so high as a remix? But if I’m at a radio thing, I play the more acoustic original version. It’d be a bit selfish to completely abandon the remix at a concert, where people paid money and want to hear that version of the song. It starts off with just me and it ends at just me. The remix is too fast for me physically, so we slow it down. When you play the song live, are you playing the remix or are you going to play the album version? I had some version of that interaction with different words. I want to say about 9.5. The only part that’s not 100 percent autobiographical is the third verse of the original, where I say, “I met some fans on Lafayette.” This exact encounter did not take place with these exact quotes. We’ll start with the question I’m sure everybody asks: O n a scale of one to ten, how autobiographical is the song? (Both versions of “Ibiza” will appear on his second album, At Night, Alone, coming May 6.) The day before he performed the song on The Tonight Show, he stopped by Vulture’s offices for a candid talk about success and ambition, and what he’s learned since his first brush with fame. Posner is aware of the irony: A song he wrote attempting to disavow his fame has made him more famous than ever before, thanks to no particular effort of his. (In the U.K., where the Mediterranean island is a more relatable reference to the average punter, it’s currently at No. “I get along with old-timers ‘cause my name’s a reminder of a pop song people forgot.” The song wasn’t a hit, until Posner’s vocal track was picked up by Norwegian duo SeeB, who sped it up and added a pulsating EDM beat their remix has “Ibiza,” a year after its release, in the Billboard Top Ten. “I’m just a singer who already blew his shot,” he sings. One of them, “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” baits the hook with a story of a wild night Posner experienced with the Swedish DJ Avicii, before swerving toward its real subject: Posner’s complicated feelings toward his own mild level of fame. In 2015, he released an EP, The Truth, full of sensitive acoustic jams. A career as the next Dan Wilson or Linda Perry did not seem unthinkable.īut while he was out of the spotlight, Posner didn’t stop making music on his own. He gave “Boyfriend” to Justin Bieber and “Sugar” to Maroon 5, and wrote songs for Austin Mahone, Nick Jonas, and Big Time Rush. He scrapped two attempts at a sophomore record, Sky High and Pages, and turned his attention to songwriting and producing. “I was still fighting my depression, and the world felt too big,” he would tell fans in a video a few years later. He was 22 years old.Īfter that, Posner’s high-pitched rasp disappeared from the radio. A third single, “Bow Chicka Wow Wow,” featuring Lil’ Wayne, got to No. Its follow-up, “Please Don’t Go,” hit No. In 2010, the Detroit native’s jaunty debut single, “Cooler Than Me,” peaked at No. For the last five years, Mike Posner has existed in the strange shadow world of the formerly famous. When players choose a gamemode for the first time, an introductory video is played, showing how to complete its objectives. The game was released with six official maps, although over one hundred maps have since been included in subsequent updates, including community-created maps. Although the abilities of a number of classes have changed from earlier Team Fortress incarnations, the basic elements of each class have remained, that being one primary weapon, one secondary weapon, and one melee weapon. In order to accomplish objectives efficiently, a balance of these classes is required due to how these strengths and weaknesses interact with each other in a team-based environment. Players can choose to play as one of nine character classes in these teams, each with their own unique strengths, weaknesses, and weapon sets. Since early 2020, official Valve servers for the game have seen an influx of bot accounts using cheat software, often inhibiting normal gameplay. Though the game has had an unofficial competitive scene since its release, both support for official competitive play through ranked matchmaking and an overhauled casual experience were added in July 2016. A 'drop system' was also added and refined, allowing free-to-play users to periodically receive in-game equipment and items. In June 2011, the game became free-to-play, supported by microtransactions for in-game cosmetics. The game continues to receive official Valve server support as of January 2023, in addition to new content being released on a seasonal basis in the form of submissions made through the Steam Workshop. Team Fortress 2 has received critical acclaim for its art direction, gameplay, humor, and use of character in a wholly multiplayer game and since its release has been referred to as one of the greatest video games ever created. Leyendecker, Dean Cornwell, and Norman Rockwell, alongside an increased focus on the visual and verbal characterization of its playable classes and what the developers have described as a 1960s spy movie aesthetic. Finally released on the Source game engine in 2007, Team Fortress 2 would preserve much of the core class-based gameplay of its predecessors while featuring an overhauled, cartoon-like visual style influenced by the works of J. After Valve released no information for six years, Team Fortress 2 regularly featured in Wired News ' annual vaporware list among other entries. Initially, the game had more realistic, militaristic visuals and gameplay, but this changed over the protracted nine years of development. Team Fortress 2 was announced in 1998 under the name Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms. Development was led by John Cook and Robin Walker, the developers of the original Team Fortress mod. "The most fun you can have online" - PC Gamer Drucker supposes that “the nostalgic attachment to the idea of an ‘origin’ of poetry in song makes us give more significance to sound values over visual ones,” but she goes on to point out how in most cases, the sounds of poetry could not exist without the visual texts to convey it: “If I erase the letters no ‘sound’ remains” (238–39). Footnote 2 Visual lines keep in ways that heard ones do not, even if the physical manner in which texts are kept is always evolving (early texts were recorded on papyri then they were stored in books in libraries latterly, on servers in bytes). Some classical scholars even propose that the ancient Greeks developed their alphabet expressly to preserve Homer’s poetry. The lastingness of physical texts, compared to the ephemerality of sounds or mental pictures, is surely one reason why poems tend to be written down. Footnote 1 How much was Shelley thinking about the preservation of his own lines and meanings as he imagined the history of a king’s ill-fated boast? And what general lessons about poetry’s physical staying power does he engrave in the inscription he places at the heart of “Ozymandias”? Surely “the decay / Of that colossal Wreck” not only announces a whole civilization’s destruction but also hints at the poet’s consideration of his own legacy (12–13). Several of the problems Shelley addresses in his sonnet about a broken statue-how time erodes power, how things do not last-are figured in the verbal and visual materiality of the text itself. This essay, as it sidles up to Shelley’s “Ozymandias,” concerns itself with the value of that poem’s visual element: its presence on the page. Notwithstanding the ancient, oral tradition, our ability to see a poem (in some form of print) remains integral to our reception of it, no matter how emphatic or pleasing its sounds are. And, as Johanna Drucker has noted with regard to poetry’s graphical qualities and codes, “the transmission history of poetry depends upon visual forms” (237). As readers, we most often encounter them visually: in books or on screens. Yet poems, in their presentation, are subject to the realities of space and time. Where do poems live-the ear, the page, or the mind? Questions like this reflect poetry’s phenomenological variety. Interrogating “Ozymandias” for its enthusiasm as well as its skepticism regarding print, the essay wishes to raise the following question: how does Shelley’s attitude towards poetry’s remains-its “everlasting” power-prefigure our own contemporary debates regarding the permanence and impermanence of poetic texts in a digital age? Two hundred years on, what remains of Shelley’s poetry besides words on a page? The extent to which words, and the pages on which they appear, mattered to Shelley constitutes the broad subject of this essay, which also permits itself to dwell in a few unanswerable questions about where poetry resides-the throat, the letter, or somewhere else entirely. In Horace Smith’s nearly forgotten companion to Percy Shelley’s most famous sonnet, the broken sculpture voices its decree: “‘I am great Ozymandias,’ saith the stone.” Shelley’s poem, on the other hand, takes care to give us the king’s speech in writing: “on the pedestal, these words appear.” Shelley’s instinct for the difference between inscription and saying speaks to his own belief in poetry’s staying power. Patients should always be wary if a clinic advertises a patient-funded clinical trial. Patients should ask clinics for documentation from FDA that they are conducting a clinical trial under an active investigational new drug application, also known as an IND. These claims are false.Ĭlinics often advertise that they are conducting clinical trials using these products. They may claim that their registration with FDA or an FDA inspection equates to FDA approval or a form of FDA endorsement. Some clinics may falsely advertise that it is not necessary for FDA to review and approve their stem cell therapies. The FDA regulates stem cell and exosome products in the United States. The FDA has not approved any exosome products for any uses. If the products are being used for arthritis, injury-related pain, chronic joint pain, anti-aging or other health issues, they have not been approved by FDA and are being marketed illegally. Be sure to get all of the facts if you are considering any stem cell treatment. These products may have the potential to treat many medical conditions and diseases, but further research is needed to know whether the products have any benefit or whether they are safe to use. While all medical treatments have benefits and risks, unapproved stem cell and exosome products expose patients to potential risks without a clear benefit. Jim retired in 1910 and named Tom his successor. Joseph’s MO in the 1890s and he worked in his brother Jim’s saloon in the West Bottoms which had been bought with winnings from the horse track. When Jim Pendergast died in 1911, his brother Tom took over the machine. Jim Pendergast feared the rivalry between the Goats and the Rabbits would help Republicans win back political power so he negotiated an arrangement with Joe Shannon to share equally the spoils of political control of Kansas City. The Goat faction was larger but Shannon was the shrewder strategist and often got the better deal in political maneuverings. The Pendergast’s faction was called the Goats and Shannon’s faction was known as the Rabbits. They adopted labels to distinguish their factions. The Pendergasts and Joe Shannon were both bosses in the Democratic Party. He opposed the Pendergasts as supporters of the saloon and gambling interests. Nelson sought to improve and beautify Kansas City and his natural following was the middle and upper classes. The Pendergast brothers sought to control Kansas City and its surrounding area, Jackson County however, early on, they were opposed by two others, Joe Shannon who sought the allegiance of the same populations groups that supported the Pendergasts and “Baron Bill” Nelson, the publisher of the The Star, the major newpaper of Kansas City. This allowed Jim’s brother Tom to become the Superintendent of Streets, which allowed him to hire 200 workers and buy material and equipment for the street-paving program. In 1900 the Pendergasts elected their first mayor and replaced Republican city workers with their supporters. Reed, but every other key office at City Hall. During the peak of his power, he not only hand picked his own mayor, James A. Jim Pendergast was a Kansas City alderman who for 18 years reached out to his fellow Irishmen and to various other immigrant groups. The Pendergast Brothers: Early in the 20th Century, the most powerful force in Missouri politics was the Pendergast machine. ( Note: At the end of this entry there is a “ Memorandum Regarding Relations with Pendergast Machine” written by Harry S. Truman, who eventually became the nation’s 33 rd President. It was also famous because an early beneficiaty of the Pendergast machine was Harry S. It was built and led by two brothers, who controlled Kansas City politics for nearly 40 years. For example, a notable political machine at the turn of the century was the Pendergast machine of Kansas City, Missouri. To urban reformers of the early 20th century, the bosses and their organizations personified political corruption. cities, the political boss represented a source of patronage jobs. For immigrants and the poor in many large U.S. Many immigrants saw bosses and political machines as a means to greater enfranchisement. Introduction: Political bosses and their “machine organizations” operating in large American cities at the turn of the century enjoyed strong support among the poor and immigrants, who returned the favor by voting for the bosses’ preferred candidates. When Jackson was recalled to a second hearing for a much tougher grilling, it reinforced the perception her case had been mishandled for political reasons. The Pendergast Machine of Kansas City, Missouri (1900-1939) This is partly why the commission lost credibility. The initial lack of rigour in the royal commission's approach to Jackson left it open to accusations it was following a pre-written narrative, rather than being led by evidence. The real whistleblower in the Jackson saga, McGregor, was maligned by the royal commission for trying to hold Jackson to account for her suspected misdeeds.
